Andersen, Cindy

After teaching private piano lessons for over a decade, I started a group piano studio four years ago using the Mayron Cole group piano method.  My students have thrived!  Students love the fun atmosphere of learning with their peers & learning through games.  Parents love the added motivation their child feels to practice so they'll be ready to play with the class at their next lesson.  Group students typically become more rhythmically solid because they have to play in an ensemble setting weekly.  Classes start at the preschool level & run up into beginning advanced students.

I have over 25 years experience in music education, concentrating on keyboard skills, mastery of scales, duet playing, fundamentals of music theory and aural testing.     My students range from pre-schoolers to adults. There are no two students alike, so recognizing that fact and not making the process into a race, I hope to develop an appreciation and a lifelong love of music. I hold annual recitals in my home for students and parents, which is always a delightful event.I am classically trained (to the standards set by the Royal Schools of Music, London, UK) and encourage students to explore classical, jazz and popular genres.   Exposing students to a world of music is my passion and joy.

Barker, Brooke

Hello! My name is Brooke Barker and I love music! I love to teach music, listen to music, and play music. I have played the piano for over 25 years and taught the piano for 13! Our family just relocated from Utah where I left behind 25 wonderful students. Some of those I watched blossom on the piano from age 6 to age 19 when they left for college! I love seeing the self esteem learning a musical instrument brings. Along with learning should come lots of fun, and a reward base system that even the most uncooperative child can be swayed into learning. I believe in the benefits of music learning. When learning a musical instrument you not only learn a skill that you will have for the rest of your life, but the student learns determination, organization, and self confidence. At Brooke's piano studio the student has the opportunity to play in at least 2 recitals each year, participate in group based activities quarterly, and have a weekly lesson planned for them individually. Everyone learns differently, so as a teacher I have many different teaching methods to create a plan to help each student succeed. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me!

I have a Bachelor of Science degree (psychology major) from Grand Canyon University and a Master of Counseling degree from Arizona State University. I also have experience with improvisation from chord charts. Teaching piano lessons and sharing my passion for the art of piano playing is a true joy. Lessons are generally comprised of theory, technique, and repertoire. Monthly musicale (group lesson) is also provided. My students will be prepared for participation in the Arizona Study Program, though I do not require participation. I provide piano lessons to children age 4 through high school. I'm a proud native of Arizona. I attended Corona del Sol High School and Arizona State University where I met my husband, Justin. We have two amazing kids, Logan and Piper. We are very involved in the music program at our church, Dayspring United Methodist in Tempe.

I have been a music educator in both Arizona charter and public schools for almost a decade. Graduating Summa Cum Laude in choral music education with an emphasis in piano from Arizona State University, I had the opportunity to study under the world-renowned pianists: Prof. Walter Cosand and Dr. Caio Pagano.

My piano career began at the age of 6 under the guidance of my late friend and mentor, Mrs. Edith Yarter. Ede, as we lovingly called her, quickly became a close friend of the family. She gave me the tools to not only read music, practice effectively, and perform, but also instilled a sense of confidence that carried me through many arduous years of practice and performance.

In middle and high school, I accompanied my school choirs as well as schools across the valley for both standard performances and competitions. The ability to accompany ignited a fire and passion for choral music. Working with great directors and choirs was a high point of my secondary and college career.

Chesley, Angie

My name is Angie Chesley and I have been teaching piano and voice for the past 14 years, both at The Music Store and in my private home studio.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages and love to watch them succeed.  My philosophy is that music should be enjoyable as well as educational.  I focus on the technical aspects of learning music, but I feel that it is very important that the student enjoy the music that they are creating.
My love of music and the arts began very early in my life as I watched my Father play the piano and sing professionally with various bands.  When I was older I performed regularly with my Father in Nashville, TN near the Grand Old Opry at Shoney’s Inn and other venues.  I grew up taking weekly piano lessons from my Grandmother who was a music teacher in demand, and dancing with the dance company where my Mother was a dance teacher.
In High School I performed with the top choirs and was one of the accompanists for the choirs.  I attended BYU-Idaho where I was a music major and accompanied singers as well as sang in the choirs.  I have also been in many Broadway productions as a soloist, in the chorus, and in the dance team.
I have been singing professionally with the band “The Swingtips” for many years and have sung on many of their CD’s.  I am also a veteran in the recording studio and have done many professional recordings as a singer.
In recent years I have developed a love for jazz piano and have studied for the past 6 years with Steve Culp who is a professional jazz pianist and is a member of the band “Turning Point”, and with Barb Catlin who is also a professional jazz pianist and is the head of the Jazz Department as Mesa Community College.  I have had the opportunity to perform professionally with the MCC jazz combo at the Tempe Arts Festival and look forward to many more performing opportunities.
I am currently finishing my music education degree with Ottawa University and plan to continue with my masters.
I am the mother of 2 wonderful boys ages 12 and 5 and love to share my love of the arts with my boys.

Conroy, Mark

Mark Conroy currently teaches in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley & Cave CreekWith a spirit of excellence for teaching piano, Mark Conroy is known for cultivating talent in students of all ages. He drives growth development within the student’s own potential.  Musical expression flows in his veins and he loves sharing his passion for lyrical creativity with young people.  He strives to build a fun working environment that inspires effective practice and innovation, offering the tools and support students need and thrive upon. Mark ignites that refreshing focus that makes his students feel as ease and excited about learning.  When taking on a new student, he quickly identifies and analyzes the student’s natural talent and builds a clear vision with a centric focus on the end result.  He understands student’s behavioral issues of all ages and customizes his teaching approach to maximize the innate talent, often times hidden within each individual student. Mark began studying piano at age eight and at age twelve, won 1st Place in the Iowa State Piano Competition.  He then began his studies with concert pianist, Julian Burn of Cornell College. He again won 1st Place in the Iowa State Piano Competition, at age eighteen.  Mark’s technical ability gained him acceptance under concert pianist, Menahem Pressler, international award-winning pianist and founder of the Beaux Arts Trio.  Mark’s studies with Pressler began at the Indiana School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. Mark is also known for his original song writing.  His musical compositions flow with a beauty and intensity rarely experienced in live performance, leaving the audience in spellbound amazement.  His songs are registered with ASCAP and are available on iTunes.   References:Referral written by Kimberly Kur, Sr. Director of Philanthropic Services at the Arizona Community Foundation (602-920-9452)Mark began instructing our son in piano when he was almost 6-years old & has continued with Mark for the last 4-1/2 years. Mark has a deep passion for teaching children not only how to play piano but also to appreciate music and performing. While Mark is there to guide and inspire his students, he also instills in them confidence and a sense of independence. He is patient, flexible and kind in his approach to teaching, but also expects his students to apply themselves, practice daily and be committed to the process of learning. In our case, we have had no problems in getting our son to practice almost daily for the last 4 1/2 years, and we attribute this to: 1) the respect our son has for Mark; 2) the work ethic that Mark has instilled in our son and 3) our son's love of the piano that Mark has played a major role in developing. We appreciate Mark's flexibility with scheduling and being able to come to our home for lessons. He is a joy to work with on all levels and a very special person as well. Mark produces 2 recitals each year, often hosting them in his home with a lovely reception following so that the families have a chance to mingle and enjoy each other. He makes every effort to accommodate all of our crazy schedules because he wants to make sure every student has the opportunity to perform. Students are taught to introduce themselves and share the music they will be playing, and they perform beautifully. All ages and abilities are represented, usually with the strongest performances at the end. Mark's comments are inspiring for both the students and the families and the experience is great for our children. We are beyond thrilled with our son's piano playing under Mark's instruction. We feel Mark has taken our son's natural abilities and helped them to blossom in beautiful ways. We love that our son loves to play and has never waivered in his desire to continue learning with Mark. He has also had the opportunity to perform in 8 piano recitals in his 4 1/2 years of playing which have been amazing growing experiences for him. On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being highest, we rate Mark at 10.Sincerely,Kimberly Kur Referral written by Steve Gevirtz,Associate Member of the Piano Technicians Guild (480-518-3941)Our son began studying piano with Mark Conroy when he was 6 years old and has been with Mark for 8-1-2 years. Mark conducts masterfully detailed lessons capturing the focus of our son's attention. Mark recommended we remain presence during the lessons. As an observer, I became aware that one of the strongest tools employed by Mark is phenomenal patience. He periodically interjects precision feedback with enlivening analogies our son can relate to. The goal of Mark's approach is engineered to enhance confidence and determination. He is most respectful while communicating and immediately earned our son's commitment and our trust. These terms have served to maintain the ideal conditions for enjoyable and efficient mentoring. This musical energy is palpable and easily recognized by other students and parents during student performances at recitals hosted my Mark. Familiar students noticeably continue improving in repertory and technical skills. Also very noticeably, are those students who have been with Mark for two or more years developing unique qualities of artfulness in musical interpretation. It is apparent that Mark will accommodate the diversity of students' musical goals, but has emphatically indicated the necessity of proper technique which eventually yields to all masterful freedom in performance. Mark is a definite 10 on the rating scale. The recital venues are comfortable, inspiring and always feature a finely prepared concert grand piano.Regards,Steve Gevirtz  Referral written by Anita Grossman,Doctor’s wife and parent (Contact info available upon request)My son began lessons with Mark at age 10. He has continued to study with him for the past 5 years. Mark is an excellent teacher. He is an extremely talented professional pianist who is dedicated and creative with his students. Not only does he teach technique, he has taught my son to have passion for music through patience and practice. His teaching strategies are unique to each child. My son has a love of sports, and Mark utilizes sports imagery and psychology to motivate and inspire him. There are two recitals per year at Mark’s studio. The recitals give his students an opportunity to shine, as well as perform publicly. Mark is very supportive and coaches each child on everything from pre-recital practice sessions to introducing themselves to the audience. The recitals are high quality and each student is warmly received. As a result of studying with Mark, my son enjoys playing piano and has mastered complex pieces of music. His piano playing has sparked his creativity and drive to succeed, which has translated to schoolwork and other activities as well. I would highly recommend Mark as a piano instructor, and rate him a “10” on a scale of 1-10.Sincerely,Anita Grossman

Cory has been playing and teaching in the Valley for over 20 years.  He has played a wide variety of styles with emphasis on Rock, Pop, and Praise & Worship music.  Cory's musicianship is largely the result of practical experience, having left music school to tour with a Top 40 group.  He does, however, employ his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology on a daily basis, "using immediate gratification (songs) to motivate students into learning what they need to know (theory)."  While Cory is capable of providing in-depth study, his philosophy of music leans toward the "less talk, more play!" approach.  Cory currently plays in his own acoustic duo act and with his church’s worship team.  His love of music and positive attitude provide a welcome learning environment for students of all ages. Foxx, Jennifer

Hi! I am Jennifer Foxx and I have been teaching for over 25 years and absolutely LOVE it! My mission as a teacher is to provide a quality music education to each of my students. When students learn from me, they are learning so much more than how to play the piano. After all, music is history, science, foreign language, math and art. I like to incorporate all those facets of music into my teaching.

In addition to teaching, I write a blog for piano teachers at MusicEducatorResources.com, and I create, develop and sell music educational resources and curriculum for music teachers and their students. My students reap this benefit for FREE! In addition, I have also been invited to teach seminars to piano instructors all over the world through various conferences.

I was a keynote speaker at the AZ Federation of Music Clubs State Conference in 2014. I have written articles for several magazines including Clavier Companion, The Piano Bench, and have reviewed publications for American Music Teacher. I am also a regular presenter at the Arizona State Music Teachers Association conference, and have been interviewed on multiple international podcasts and programs.

I am a member of the Arizona State Music Teachers Association (ASMTA), the Phoenix Music Teachers Association (PMTA), and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). Why does this matter to you? Because of my memberships, my students have opportunities to participate in exclusive association events they wouldn’t otherwise be eligible to join. PLUS it is important that your teacher continues their education. Being a member of these professional associations allows me the opportunity to do just that by attending conferences, classes and events each year. I have had the pleasure to serve in many leadership capacities in the local chapters over the years including serving as President in two different MTNA chapters.

I invite you to visit my website, FoxxPianoStudio.com and schedule your free introductory lesson. This will give you a chance to see first-hand the amazing opportunities awaiting you at Foxx Piano Studio. I look forward to helping you on your musical journey..

Kevin Gorman holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University and a Master of Music degree in saxophone performance from Northwestern University. Additionally, he earned a Master of Arts degree in music history and literature and a Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance from ASU, where he has also served as a faculty associate in saxophone and chamber music. His teachers include Joseph Wytko, Frederick Hemke, Eugene Rousseau, Donald Sinta, and George Wolfe. A repeated winner in the prestigious Monterey Bay and Coleman chamber music competitions, Dr. Gorman has performed as orchestral saxophonist with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, the Arizona Musicfest Orchestra, the Sun City Symphony, the Mesa Symphony, the Sierra Vista Symphony, the ASU Symphony Orchestra, the Arizona Musicfest Orchestra, and the West Valley Symphony, in addition to guest soloist appearances with the Sonoran Desert Chorale and the Sierra Winds Woodwind Quintet. His playing can be heard on seven compact discs on the Summit Records and TimeGrabber Digital labels, and he is the featured alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone soloist on the companion discs to the internationally released Standard of Excellence: Festival Solos series (Book 2). For well over a decade, he has performed across the United States as baritone and tenor saxophonist with the Joseph Wytko Saxophone Quartet -- a critically acclaimed ensemble that was selected for broadcast on National Public Radio's Performance Today, among many other accolades. Dr. Gorman has served as the instructor of saxophone at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and several schools in the Phoenix Metro area, including Grand Canyon University and Southwestern College.Weekly one-hour or 30-minute lessons feature a complement of scales and scale patterns, technical and expressive etudes, and both transcriptions and original literature for the instrument. Emphasis is on the alto saxophone, for which most saxophone literature is composed. However, students of the soprano, tenor, or baritone saxophones will receive specialized study, with lessons focused on the specifics of their instrument. Jazz instruction (swing, latin, rock, etc.) emphasizes style by means of articulation, inflection, and interpretation, gained through careful listening and imitation. Lessons are typically structured and paced to prepare students for eventual entry into college-level study in saxophone. However, serious beginners, including adults, are encouraged to inquire about lesson availability as well. High school aged students most often audition for Arizona Regional, Solo and Ensemble, and All-State Festivals. In the past, advanced private students of Dr. Gorman have performed for visiting saxophone masters such as Frederick Hemke and Eugene Rousseau. Saxophone studio recitals are offered in the fall and spring, providing both solo and chamber music performance opportunities for all. Teaching locations service the east valley in the Ahwatukee/Chandler area and the downtown Phoenix arts district.

I am 16 years old, and I'm homeschooled. I'm currently taking classes at CGCC and I take my education, as well as music, very seriously.I started taking private piano lessons at the age of 6, and since then I have just loved piano, violin, Theory, and everything to do with music! I started private lessons for violin at the age of 7. I played in Metropolitan Youth Symphony from the age of 9 to 13, and I now play with Youth Symphony of the Southwest. I also sing, so I can definitely be of assistance if accompaniment is your interest.I have been teaching for five years, and have always loved helping students discover their talents. I charge $15 dollars per 1/2 hour lesson, and students usually have 1 lesson a week. I have afternoon lesson times available as well as mornings.I think it really helps student's confidence and skill to perform for others, so I hold recitals twice a year in the Fall and Spring. I will be a member of the East Valley Music Teacher's Association starting in July, so participation in Arizona Study Program is also offered.

When I turned seven years old, my siblings and I were introduced to our piano teacher.  We did not want to learn piano.  Our parents insisted, so we took years of piano lessons.  These lessons led us to other instruments and other arts.  I started teaching when I was 14, and I found I loved to teach.  I made a better teacher than student!  I began to study and perform more intently.  I majored in Communication Arts at Loyola Marymount University.  I earned my certification as a piano teacher in California, and consequently became a full member of the California Music Teachers Association.  I moved to Arizona in 2000 where I joined the East Valley Music Teachers Association.  I have taught groups, semi private, and private lessons.  I teach all levels and all ages.  Since I have three boys with autism, several of my piano students have special needs.  My goal for my students is to love music, no matter their level of mastery.

Hello!  My name is Cheryl Langley and I am a new piano teacher in Scottsdale!  I am thrilled to teach piano here and make new friends!  My life at the piano includes playing for many church functions, school choirs, a show choir, high school theatre, and competitions at local and state levels.  I have actively taught piano for thirteen years.  During this time I have witnessed the transformation of students who could not play the piano into accompanists, composers, and performers.  I believe that music is a “living art” that must be shared and felt.   My goal is to help students find the music inside them and share it with others.  Students in my studio will explore different musical styles such as, but not limited to, contemporary, classical, jazz, blues and choose those they enjoy.  They will also practice sight reading and ear training in  a computer lab.  Recitals and group performances will provide students a chance to share with others.    I hold a bachelors degree in Elementary Education and a license to teach.  Professionally I belong to the Music Teachers National Association and its affiliate the Phoenix Music Teachers Association.  Before moving to Scottsdale, I served as a chapter president of the Utah Music Teachers Association for three years.   As a member of MTNA I am able to attend workshops and conferences with talented pianists and musicians.  My membership also gives students access to performances, recitals and adjudications.  I also belong to the National Federation of Music Clubs.  This gives students an opportunity to develop performance skills in a non-competitive environment.  Currently, I am pursuing an Elementary Piano Pedagogy Certificate from Mesa Community College.   I welcome all students eager to learn and willing to practice, ages 6 to adult, beginners to early advanced players.  I believe piano lessons should be engaging and  fun with a commitment to work.  My studio includes two pianos with a computer lab ready to serve to you!  Come check it out!

Discover the power & beauty of music, develop skills for excellence, discipline the mind for life.  Quality private piano and music theory instruction for students of all ages and levels.  Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, MM Piano Pedagogy.  Enthusiastic, dedicated, experienced, and credentialed teacher.   It is a privilege to be able to present my background, philosophies, and procedures to you. I hope that you’ll find this information helpful as you make your decision to join the studio. First and foremost is the learning partnership created between the student and teacher, supported by the family at home. Together we will set musical goals for the year and develop a plan to reach those goals. As we work together at the piano to discover the beauty and power of music, we’ll be learning how to practice and develop the skills needed for musical success. Your commitment to regular practicing will be a critical part of your study. As we know, learning to play the piano well is not a short term project. It is this discipline over time that will give you results that you hope for! Students are scheduled for individual weekly lessons (length generally determined by advancement) during the school year. Performance and evaluation opportunities are selected together at the beginning of the academic year. Some of the programs involve only the studio, while others are local or state-wide events. During the summer months, a variety of programs are offered from which you may select. It’s a good idea to keep some music going over the long summer break. . .it’s fun, it’s indoors (great for AZ heat) and it keeps your skills up! Adult students are given special consideration within the studio, working with Sherry to set and meet personal musical goals at the piano. Flexible scheduling is available to suit various schedules. A Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, Mrs. Lenich has been teaching for 35 years, operating studios in Arizona and Pennsylvania. She holds a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. She is an active collaborative performer/accompanist working with teachers & students throughout the Valley in recitals and evaluations.

I have been teaching since 1959, and teach both children and adults. I teach more in a half hour than most teachers teach in an hour. I'm concise, thorough, and have many short cuts to learning which I've developed over the years. I am extremely good with children, and they can't wait to come again the following week. I teach on a Schimmel Grand Piano, which my students really enjoy. Give me a try, and you won't be disappointed. Call for references and fees.

Hello! My name is Nicci (pronounced Nicky).  I am excited to be able to give back part of the wonderful gift I have been given.  I teach from my home which is conveniently located near Country Club & University in Mesa. I have lived most of my life in Mesa, Arizona and I love it here. I have been married for 9 years to the love of my life, and together we have 5 beautiful children. Music has always been an important part of my life. There are two women who have greatly influenced my love for music, and the development of my musical talents. The first is my grandmother. She gave me my first piano lesson when I was 5 years old and I was so excited! The second is the piano teacher that taught me through most of my youth. She always encouraged me to teach, and thanks to her inspiration, example and guidance I have finally taken the plunge! Although I have never played at Carnegie Hall, I have had the privilege to play for most of my adult life in various callings at church and as an accompanist for vocal and instrumental soloists and choirs. I am so grateful for the talent that I have been given, and would love to help you discover yours! I teach Let's Play Music! classes to children ages 4-6.  Let's Play Music! is a music theory course that emphasizes total musicianship through piano playing, singing, classical music, note reading and ear training... and it's accomplished through PLAY!  This really is the most fantastic program I have found to teach music to young children. Class size is 5-8 students and classes run through the school year.  For additional information please visit my blog: http://letsplaymusicwithnicci.blogspot.com.In addition to the group Let's Play Music! classes, I also maintain a small studio of private students.  This year, I have begun teaching Sound Beginnings classes, a parent-toddler music class designed to provide a solid music and preschool foundation for children ages 2-4. I understand that times are tough, and don't want money to prevent you or your child from discovering and developing your talents.  My lesson rates are very affordable, and I am willing to consider trades in lieu of payment for lessons, so please, don't hesitate to contact me!

My own wonderful first-hand experience as a parent of a Let’s Play Music student has inspired me to help other children experience the power of this curriculum in developing their lifelong musical abilities starting at ages 4-6 years. I love to play piano and sing, and I'm excited to expand the Let's Play Music program in South Chandler.

I enjoy the simple things in life and i appreciate, and understand the complexities of life and how fragile it/we can be. Something as simple as sharing the table with friends/family can be, and may very well be an example of what life and enjoying it is all about,am a warmhearted, I am a person who is positive about every aspect of life. There are many things I like to do, to see, and to experience. I like to read, I like to write; I like to think, I like to dream; I do not like to talk much, I like to listen. The Piano Teacher: As a graduate of Northern Arizona Universtiy's wonderful music program, I've developed a deep love for sharing the benefits of performing arts through piano education. I began teaching in the east valley in 2011 and have truly enjoyed  leading students to achieving their many different goals. To develop my teaching skills, I continue my own education by studying piano through Mesa Community College and attending various teacher workshops and conferences throughout the year. I also hold the 4th Vice President position in the Arizona State Music Teachers Association which alows me to help other piano teachers in the community.   The Studio: I welcome all ages to join my studio. I teach in two locations, my home studio in Mesa and my academy (Jade Moon Performing Arts Academy) in Tempe. Students may choose which location is more convenient for them. Lessons are either 45-minutes or 1-hour, depending on the level and age of the student. The Program: At the beginning of each semester, we will review the students goals for piano study. In each students personalized study program, we cover piano repertoire, music theory, technique, music history, ear training, musicianship, composition, sight-reading and sight-singing, world music, and collaboration with other musicians/artists. In order to give students a greater understanding of how musicians contribute to society, I provide both traditional and innovative performance opportunities. This creates a positive space students to inspire others with their art. What to Expect: I strive to provide a well-rounded, personalized, piano education program from beginning to intermediate levels. Because I am a Arizona State Music Teachers Association member, students can participate in various competitions, festivals and evaluations (like the Arizona Study Program). Students will find that through the lessons, they will not only improve their piano skills, but also see growth in self-confidence and commitment to reaching long-term goals.I look forward to having you join our piano family!

I work in a small studio in East Mesa where we teach different instruments and ensembles. I attended Richard Strauss Konservatorium in Munich, Germany with emphasis on Church Music. My primary instruments were organ and piano with a strong secondary emphasis on choral conducting, voice and ensemble. I retired from 30 years in church music filling different positions in Germany, Michigan and mostly here in the East Valley. I have my own business now but enjoy teaching too much on order to give it up entirely. I like to instill in my students a love for music and the instrument they chose. A lot can be accomplished with dilligent practice and exercise and I am a relentless pursuer of perfection in a talented student. As they learn from me I also learn from them and together we can make music that comes from the heart.

In addition, we teach most band and orchestra instruments such as violin, viola, cello, brass (trumpet, trombone, french horn, baritone, tuba) and winds (flute, clarinet, saxophone). Our instructors have many years of experience and most have advanced degrees. For a complete lineup of instructors and instruments offered, click here. Many of our students have gone on to scholarships at prestigious universities and careers as musicians. We’re thrilled to work with the very young beginners up to the aspiring professionals. We offer performances annually at nursing homes and at the mall. We also have recitals, open-mic nights and spotlight concerts. We do a huge Showcase every year at a major venue and all students are invited to perform. Check out the studio, teachers, parent comments and Showcase highlights on this video.

I have moved from Scottsdale where my students, known as the McDowell Mountain Musicians, enjoyed learning to play the piano and mastering their favorite songs (solos and duets) for performances at various senior residences throughout their city.  The children feft a sense of accomplishment as well as feeling proud that they were able to "give back" to their community through their music. As a speech therapist I implemented music therapy for children with special needs.  I taught in northern CA before moving to AZ.  My Upscale Piano Studio in Chandler is located in Fulton Ranch.  I am currently enrolling new students this fall for fun-filled lessons of treats and interactive activities!  Please contact me either by phone: 480-326-6874 or Email: gotmiddlec@aol.com.

I am committed to inspiring, educating, and preparing innovative artists and creative leaders for the 21st century that will be recognized for their individual artistic achievement as well as for their contribution to society within their chosen discipline later in life.Creative piano pedagogy involves sophisticated work that first requires understanding and knowing one's student, their temperament, mentality, needs, and desires. The next step is having a wide variety of musical and intellectual experiences to transfer to students in a supportive and safe environment. As a thoughtful piano teacher, I strive to stimulate and develop students’ potential and musical ability, and guide them to develop their music and intellectual expression independently. I do educate and train future piano artists and instructors. However, I work with numerous students who will not choose music as their profession. The ultimate goal of piano learning is to contribute to the development of a whole person, develop critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. My approach to teaching combines a solid foundation in professional craft methodologies with high performance standards that reflect the best in professional practices. I challenge students to think in imaginative and unconventional ways and lead them into active exploration, conceptualization and preparation of their pieces. I am keenly aware of students’ different experiences and temperaments, and concentrate on developing their strengths while ameliorating their weaknesses. To help them achieve and grow, my pedagogical approach emphasizes flexibility, collaboration, curiosity, imagination, cross-cultural perspectives, and respect for the arts and one another.I teach independent critical listening and thinking skills, seeking a balance between lecturing and asking students to make their own discoveries. I encourage them to actively engage in creating their interpretations, independently and in collaboration with myself, which reflects my belief that good teaching depends upon intellectual and creative exchange and collaboration. The goal of the individual piano lessons is for students to attain a solid foundation in piano performance, but also understanding of music, art, and history.  They are given ideas for developing their musical expression and creativity and learn to apply the skills and knowledge from piano lessons in their other work.  My approach to teaching incorporates a variety of activities, such as technique and exploring diverse repertoire appropriate to their level. The activities are designed to enhance students’ general understanding of music and piano playing and to foster continued improvement of their creative, performance, and communication skills that can be transferred to and benefit them any field of human achievement they choose in life.

I adapt lessons to the student's individual needs and learning styles. Working with the student, I help them understand where we're going in lessons and why we're covering the things we're covering. I help my students set goals, explaining what the goals will do for their overall playing. Learning to play music takes discipline and commitment, but it can also be fun and enjoyable and inspiring. I give prizes, rewards, and incentives for achievement (long-term and short-term) to motivate, inspire, and nurture my students.I also offer lots of varied performance opportunities throughout the year to spice things up and remind them why they want to learn music. Seeing other kids doing what they do (playing the piano, etc.) always gives kids a boost of energy to keep improving. It helps them see what they could sound like in the future. Seeing their peers playing makes them want to play better. It's a very important part of learning.I also help students prepare to play at their own performance opportunities such as church functions, Regional and All-state auditions, Metropolitan Youth Symphony, East Valley Youth Symphony, Phoenix Youth Guild, Mesa Youth Orchestra, Mesa Young People's Orchestra, school orchestras, school choirs, school bands, and school jazz bands, etc. (All these activities promote learning in my studio.)I teach all aspects of music including, but not limited to, classical music training, technique, scales, chords, arpeggios, phrasing, feeling, styling, ear training, reading music, playing by ear, classical repertoire, popular repertoire, jazz, music history, music theory, how to write your own songs(composition), improvisation, sight reading, fiddling, etc.I've been teaching for 15 years, and I've been playing violin and piano since I was five years old (my mother was a piano teacher, so I grew up with music and teaching). I've also studied voice, cello, viola, bass, guitar, organ, and a bit of brass, woodwinds, and percussion. I've played in church functions, national orchestra events, school orchestra, honor orchestras, accompanying singers, etc. for my entire life. Music is what I do.Tuition Policy:For a 30 minute lesson once a week, it's $85/month, every month, regardless of how many weeks there are. Payment is due at the beginning of the month for the whole month. I accept cash, and checks. If I'm coming to your home, it's $85+$50=$135/month for a 30 minute lesson once a week. (go to bottom of page for details of tuition policy)I am a member of:East Valley Music Teachers Association (EVMTA)Arizona State Music Teachers Association (ASMTA)Desert Valley Music Teachers Association (DVMTA)American String Teachers AssociationNational Music Teachers AssociationEvents:DVMTA/EVMTA/ASMTA events including:MARATHON DAY/MUSIC IN THE MALL: a recital at the mall, or a retirement community;COMPOSERS CELEBRATION CONCERT: an opportunity to perform in a concert dedicated to a specific type of music;ARIZONA STUDY PROGRAM: an intense theory training program with a written theory test at the end of the year as well as a chance to be play for and be critiqued by a master adjudicator at ASU;ORIGINAL COMPOSITION FESTIVAL: where I help students write their own songs;CAVALCADE/ENSEMBLE: where students perform duets as a group at Mountain View High School or ;MUSIC CARNIVAL: preparation for the AZ Study Program, where students play fun music games and review theory concepts in a fun way;ORGAN STOP PIZZA PARTY: a pizza party at Organ Stop Pizza;AWARDS IN EXCELLENCE: a competition where winning students receive a trophy and a cash prize;ACHIEVEMENT DAY: an opportunity to be critiqued on songs, playing ability and technique, composition, music theory, music history, ear training, duet playing, etc. Students receive a ribbon or trophy depending on the level they enter;DEVOTED PERFORMER AWARD: where students meeting the requirements get a large trophy and a cash prize;OUTSTANDING SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP: where graduating seniors can apply for a scholarship (cash prize) toward college due to their dedication and talent in music;FALL/SPRING/SENIOR RECITALS: opportunity for the best, most prepared students to perform among the best of other teachers' students at My First Piano;HONORS RECITAL/PIANO COMPETITION/PRIZE PERFORMERS: more opportunities to compete and perform;I also hold three of my own private recitals each year of just my own students at My First Piano. My First Piano has a great Recital Hall, and they videotape the recital which you can then purchase directly from them for around $12. Parents always ask me about how to MOTIVATE their kids to practice, so I'm including a bit here:First, nobody wants to practice. They want to "play" piano/violin, not "practice" piano/violin. Unfortunately, playing requires enough practice to get to the point where you can just read and play music, or just sit down and make up your own music. (Just like it takes years of learning to read and write before you can sit down and enjoy reading the Harry Potter or Twilight series.)That being said, here are things that work well for most people:Routine:If you can find a time for practicing that works on a consistent basis, this is the ideal situation. Some people practice before they go to school, some practice right when they get home from school and before homework [homework will get done no matter what because it has to, but practicing doesn't "have" to get done, so if it's the last thing of the day, most people are too tired to do it.] So in general, the earlier the better, although that's not the case for everybody. You'll have to see what works best for you. Again, I emphasize that it should NOT be the last thing you do for the day. If you're tired, and all you want to do is relax, anything you do besides relax is going to be un-enjoyable. And if it becomes the routine, you'll eventually start to resent practicing, not because you don't want to play/learn music, but because you're associating music with being tired and everything else that goes along with trying to wind down at the end of the day. In rare cases I've seen the opposite be true, where practicing helps the child unwind from the day - but that is extremely rare.Environment:The ideal environment varies from person to person - some need absolute quiet and isolation, with no one else in the room to distract them. Some need the parent sitting in the same room so that they don't feel alone, or even sitting with them on the piano bench helping them practice. Others can't have their parents near them because they feel like they're being watched/controlled/judged/et cetera and it makes them anxious and resentful. Etc. Etc. The dynamics between parent/child, sibling/sibling, and student/practice are extremely varied. Just pay attention to whatever your kid is presenting, and don't hesitate to ask for suggestions.Punishment/Reward:Practicing should never be a punishment. But it can be a "chore". If you do chore charts, like cleaning your room, taking out the garbage, etc., practicing can be on the chore chart too. And then they can mark off their chores as the finish them, and if they don't get their chores done, they don't get to go play with friends, watch TV, play video games, or whatever fun thing is happening that day. On the flip side, if they do get all their chores done, they can go play with friends, or they can go play video games, or watch TV, etc. (As a side note, if there's something genuinely unique or special happening, never use "you didn't practice, so you don't get to go to this" or practicing and music will immediately and suddenly become something the kid resents.)Then, you can also have an overall reward system, like, if they do all their chores every day for the whole week, or the whole month, then they get a treat (i.e. a new piece of clothing, a new toy, a new app for their tablet, an ice cream, a trip to the movies, a play date with friends, a lunch date with a parent --- whatever will excite and motivate the individual kid.)You can also set up a point system - they get 1 point for every day they practice, or 1 point for every ten minutes they practice, and then have different rewards/prizes for certain amounts of points - 300 points = xbox game, lego set, trip to Castles and Coasters, etc. Or 1 point = $1, so they can save up points and then buy whatever they want with the points they've earned - remember, 1 point can be whatever you make it - ten minutes, thirty minutes, whatever. The point system for time practiced has very tangible results - it's not an all or nothing system. Every time they practice they're earning points toward a "big" goal, like a lego set, or video game, or a sleepover, or something that they wouldn't otherwise get. And make sure that whatever system you use is only used for music, to make sure that it's a reward they wouldn't otherwise get. For some people it helps to set a timer to let them know how long they need to sit at the piano. Or a stop watch that will keep track of how long they practiced, then they can add that time to their points chart.A good general rule for how much a student should be practicing is this: practice five days a week, each song/scale/item three to five times each day. (Of course this varies with age and skill level. Every person is different and I will help them figure out the best ways for them to practice.) I also recommend students listen to classical music each week, and/or the CD that correlates with their music curriculum. The more they listen to (and move to) music, the better. You can set up a similar reward system for listening to classical music too. (Listening to classical music has a ton of benefits aside from helping them to learn music better and faster - just google it and you'll find tons of data on this.)Hope this helps! Details of Tuition Policy:Some months there are 5 weeks, some there are 4 weeks, some there are 3 weeks. Over time, it all balances out. My basic rate is $40/hour, or $20/half hour. There are 52 weeks in a year, minus one week for the week of Christmas equals 51 weeks. 51 weeks x $20/half hour lesson = $1020/year. $1020 divided by 12 months = $85/month. So, it's $85/month for a half hour lesson once a week, regardless of how many weeks there are in a month, including one week off for Christmas. For vacations/missed classes/illnesses/makeups: If you know you'll miss a scheduled lesson for a valid reason (i.e. family vacation, school concert, illness, etc.), let me know as far in advance as possible. If you let me know in advance, then I will do my best to reschedule that lesson. If you no-call/no-show, you forfeit that lesson and its payment, and do not get a makeup lesson or a refund. If the student is sick, and you call to let me know, I will do my best to schedule a makeup. If you no-call/no-show for any reason, you forfeit that lesson and its payment.  During the summer, we can schedule double lessons on the weeks you're here to makeup for the weeks you're gone, or have two lessons in one week - the second lesson turns into a "how to practice" session, which is always very beneficial. If I could have two or more days every week with my students it would be amazing! They would excel so fast. But that's not usually possible, so the weeks where we do a makeup and have two classes are very valuable. As a side note, I do have students that I see multiple times every week and they move at a much faster pace, so if you're interested in that let me know. Here's what a few students have said about me: "Tiffany is an amazing instructor and my kids have done so well in the year that we have been working with her! They enjoy lessons and always talk about how she tries to incorporate their personal likes and interests into the music that they are learning to play. I have had experience with many instructors as a student myself, and I am so pleased with Tiffany's work, attitude, and commitment to my children's music education. I highly, highly recommend Tiffany Westlake as a piano instructor for your student regardless of level." --Anjie"My boys have been working with Tiffany for almost a year. The change I've seen in them musically has been invaluable. All my boys sing in choirs and have voice coaches but since starting piano, they've excelled in areas of range and technical identification of chords. For instance, my 14 year old recently scored top three in the Regional chorus auditions in "sight reading". (A classical piece is given to the student 5 minutes before they go before the judges to sing) When my son came home he was ecstatic -- his first words were "I know its because of Tiffany! I was imagining myself playing it on the piano and I could hear what it was supposed to sound like. . ." My boys range from 17 years old to 7 years old and Tiffany works fabulously with all of them! She's patient and encouraging and a welcome presence every time she walks through the door." ---Lori

EDUCATION I received my master's degree in Piano Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1986 and my bachelor's degree in Piano Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983.  EXPERIENCE - TEACHING My first experience in teaching  piano students began in 1983, and I have consistently taught since then.  I was fortunate to be awarded a teaching assistantship in group piano during my study at the University of Illinois.  In addition to teaching group piano to college music majors, part of the teaching assistantship involved giving private lessons to children and adults.  Dr. James Lyke, who has written many books on teaching piano, was the professor who directed my teaching.  After receiving my master's degree, I returned to Madison.  For the next six years I taught piano students in addition to maintaining a full-time office job.  Early in 1993 I began teaching piano full-time.  My lessons generally include the use of a method book, technic book and theory book.  Students also work on piano solos in various styles, from classical to jazz and pop.  EXPERIENCE - PLAYING I maintained my own level of playing by accompanying for University of Wisconsin-Madison music students.  I played for violin, viola and cello students as well as clarinet and flute students and performed in numerous recitals.  Teachers of some of these UW-Madison students include Vartan Manoogian, David Perry, Sally Chisholm, Tyrone Greive, Parry Karp, Uri Vardi, Linda Bartley and Stephanie Jutt.

Young, Hannah

Hi!  My name is Hannah Young.  In my piano studio, students are taught in a constructivist, interactive environment.  Students discover their own taste in music by playing music from various genres.  Creativity is encouraged as students learn music theory concepts through creating their own music.  Students are motivated intrinsically as they prepare for performing opportunities and record their pieces and compositions.  Lessons are tailored to fit the unique personality, needs, level, and stage of development of each individual student.  I accept highly motivated, hard-working students who display enthusiasm for music and learning.  To take a photo tour of the studio, please visit melodiamusicstudio.webs.com.
